Laser Acne Treatments

Acne is one of the most common reasons why people visit a dermatologist. Effective treatment for acne requires a comprehensive approach, both controlling breakouts and reducing scars from previous breakouts. Many people quickly realize that store-bought products don't deliver the promised results. There is a better way to get clear, glowing skin – laser acne treatments in South Carolina from Dr. Marguerite Germain.

Dr. Germain is certified by the American Board of Dermatology and combines her medical education and training with an artistic eye for beauty. She provides exceptional cosmetic skin care and clinical dermatology for patients from all over South Carolina, including Charleston, Myrtle Beach, and Hilton Head. To learn more about the services she provides, request a consultation online or call her office at (843) 881-4440.

Personalized Treatments

For laser acne and acne scarring treatment in South Carolina, Dr. Germain uses several different lasers:

  • Smoothbeam™
  • Vbeam®
  • Gentle YAG®
  • Fraxel®
  • QuadraLASE™
  • ALA

These lasers control breakouts by targeting overactive sebaceous glands in your skin. They minimize scars by stimulating new collagen to form, which reduces the depth and softens the edges of the scar.

For optimal results, laser acne treatments should be combined with a personalized acne regimen customized for your skin type. Dr. Germaine takes the time to conduct a thorough consultation with each patient, so she will understand your concerns and your goals in order to select the most effective treatment plan.

The Procedure

Acne and acne scarring laser treatments in South Carolina are not painful. Some people have described a slight stinging sensation during the procedure. All efforts will be made to ensure your comfort, which in some cases may indicate the use of a topical anesthetic. For most people, sessions should be repeated 3 times, with 4 weeks in between each treatment. Depending upon the level of acne, additional treatments may be required. Before, during and after treatment, it is absolutely crucial to avoid sun exposure and to wear a sunscreen of at least SPF 30.

After Treatment

You will probably experience some redness and swelling after treatment, although this will last only a few hours for most patients and can be covered immediately with makeup. If you have especially sensitive skin, swelling may last for several days. Be sure to wear sunscreen and, for several days after treatment, avoid using prescription-strength topical medications.

You should see a reduction in active acne shortly after your first treatment. It will probably be about 3 months before you will see an improvement in acne scars. When sessions are complete, Dr. Germain's patients are thrilled with their clear skin and love that it both looks and feels beautifully smooth!

Alceara Acne Clearing System

The American Academy of Dermatology reports that acne is the most common skin condition in the United States. Approximately 80% of all people between the ages of 11 and 30 suffer from acne with many continuing to have acne into their 40s and beyond. Germain Dermatology in Mount Pleasant is proud to be the first and only practice in South Carolina to offer FDA-Cleared Acne Clearing System with visible results, Acleara.

Acleara Acne Clearing System is the first continuously-cooled system FDA-cleared to treat mild to moderate inflammatory acne, comedonal acne and pustular acne. The Acleara Acne Clearing System is powered by an advanced vacuum and filtered broadband light technology. The vacuum cleans pores by extracting build up of sebaceous material. Along with the targeted heating of sebaceous glands, the endogenous light activates porphryns to destroy P. acnes and reduces sebum production through photodynamic action.

Topical creams and oral medications can be effective treatments for acne outbreaks, but they can be expensive and can dry and irritate sensitive skin. What's more, acne that occurs on backs and chests can be difficult to treat topically because of the large surface area. Treating acne with pulsed light can deliver better aesthetic results, especially on inflammatory acne, without the side effects associated with topical and oral acne medications.

This is good news for the thousands of acne sufferers in the state who have tried a variety of treatments without success. Benefits of using the Acleara Acne Clearing System are:

-Visible Improvement: Reduction in peri-lesional erythema and a visible calming of lesions

-Hygienic and Comfortable Treatments: Reduced risk of cross contamination and no anesthetics, numbing or cooling gels required

-Economical: Eliminates external cool sprays and anesthetics costs

-Fast Treatments: Full face treatment typically in under 15 minutes
