We’ve had some cold days here in Charleston. For many of us that means dry, flaky skin. Before you grab that loofah and start scrubbing Dr. Germain weighs in on Winter exfoliating.
“Never mechanically exfoliate the skin. Exfoliation should be a gentle process. Use soft wash clothes or your hands to produce a natural exfoliation on the body. Products with gylcolic acid and/or urea (such as the Germain Rx Skin Smoothing Body Wash) get between the skin cells to act as a natural moisturizer.
Even though you may feel like giving your skin an extra scrub it is best to avoid over-exfoliation in the colder months and important to use gentler, less drying, scrubs during this time. If you are using a tool, such as the Clarisonic, make sure your brush heads are clean and opt for a few days a week opposed to every day use during the Winter,” advises Dr. Germain.
If you are searching for a new exfoliator February is the perfect month to try our Germain Rx Brightening Polish, sold at 20% off this month only. You constantly hear how great lasers can be for a variety of skin issues, but what laser do you choose? With so much new technology, multiple treatments and an overflow of information it’s hard to understand what laser to use and what they do.
Fraxel® (a fractional laser) is a laser beam divided into thousands of microscopic treatment zones that target a fraction of the skin at a time. These beams rejuvenate sub-surface skin cells and prompts collagen production via light energy treating wrinkles, sun spots, melasma, actinic keratoses, large pores, and scars from acne or surgery.
The treatment takes about 30 minutes, and although a skin resurfacing tool, is noninvasive and gentle. No skin is peeled or abraded away making healing minimal.
Patients may notice some redness, swelling, and flaking in the days after their Fraxel® session, but side effects are minor and give way to long-lasting results. Improvements should be visible within a week, and will continue beyond that.
Four to six treatments scheduled about a month apart may be necessary to generate a patient’s complete desired results.
