Symptoms of the Season

Tis’ the season of merriment and joy, friends and family, vacations and entertaining, but along with those come the dreaded cold, dry weather. This time of year can be wonderful for your spirit but wreck havoc on your skin.  Many people with perfectly healthy skin suffer from itching, redness, dry patches and peeling during the colder months; and those with regularly dry skin suffer severely.

Here in Charleston our skin becomes used to the humid, moist air and gets especially dry and tight in our colder months. There are certain things you can do to ease the bothersome symptoms of the season and begin spring with beautiful healthy skin.

One of the easiest fixes is to stay hydrated. This time of year we are making rounds at holiday parties, eating less than good for you foods, and enjoying a round or two of cheer. All of these festive traditions can make you dehydrated which not only affects your health on the inside, but will also affect your skin. Make sure to drink plenty of water in between all the holiday fun.

You also need to stay moisturized. Many of you probably use moisturizer each morning, but increasing this routine can save your skin during these bitter months. Make sure to moisturize your face as soon as you have cleansed, replenishing vital nutrients and oils back into your skin.  For the rest of your body you can use body oil after showering. Oils hold in moisture better than regular lotions keeping your skin moist longer through your day; they also keep water from evaporating from your skin so it is important to apply within the first few minutes from drying off from your shower or bath.

When taking a shower or bath limiting your time to 15 minutes or under and turning your dial down to a warm temperature, rather than hot, can also help decrease the occurrence of dry skin.  The hotter and longer you are in the shower or bath the more oils are depleted from your skin resulting in drier areas. Also, make sure to use gel or cream cleansers rather than bar soaps. Best rule of thumb, according to Mayo Clinic, is to find a cleanser (for face and body) that leaves your skin feeling clean and smooth not tight or dry.

Your hands, nails and cuticles also suffer this time of year. It is just as important to moisturize your hands after washing as it is your face. If you don’t wear dish gloves this time of the year may be a good time to try them out. Dish gloves can prevent dry hands as well as brittle nails. If the weather is causing dry cuticles make sure to cut them, not tear them, and use a good cuticle oil daily.

Taking good care of your skin from head to toe during the colder seasons will help you to have glowing, healthy skin come warmer weather. If you feel your symptoms are severe and taking slight precautions aren’t helping contact your dermatologist for a consult on dry skin, there could be a more severe problem.

Tis’ the season to be beautiful!

Have You Had Your Yearly Check-Up?

Have you noticed any changes in your skin since the start of the summer? Maybe some new freckles, brown spots, or just a few new signs of aging? These can all be symptoms from our lovely friend the Sun. No matter how many precautions we take or how sun-safewe are UV-rays can still affect us in ways we don’t even realize.

It is just as important to receive a yearly skin check with your dermatologist as it is for you to get a routine physical. After months of fun in the sun, vacations and play it’s a perfect time to get your yearly check. Your risk of getting skin cancer is real. Current estimates are that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.

Just like other cancers, you can learn to spot signs and detect problems from home. SkinCancer.orghas great information for helping you self-evaluate your body before your check up, and to detect any changes during the year as prevention.
The best tool is to be educated-know your body and how your skin appears, note any changes, itchy spots or anything irregular and let your dermatologist know.

There are three main types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma. Basal cell and squamous cell cancers are less serious types and make up 95% of all skin cancers. Also referred to as non-melanoma skin cancers, they are highly curable when treated early. Melanoma, made up of abnormal skin pigment cells called melanocytes, is the most serious form of skin cancer and causes 75% of all skin cancer deaths. Left untreated, it can spread to other organs and is difficult to control. *Courtesy of

Aside from skin cancer, which is the number one risk, over-exposure to the sun builds up over time causing wrinkles, brown spots and leathery skin. Visiting your dermatologist doesn’t only help to prevent skin cancer, but it can also help to eliminate signs from past sun damage. The beauty of it all is whenever you start taking the correct precautions against the sun you can actually reverse the effects, or at least some of them (not to mention stop any additional damage)!

If you have spent a little too much time unprotected in the sun start
eliminating those weary signs with some simple tips at home:

1- Exfoliate: Everyone’s skin is different and should exfoliate accordingly follow your dermatologist’s recommendations and slough off your damaged and dead skin cells safely and efficiently.
2- Moisturize: Even oily skin needs to stay hydrated, find the right moisturizer for use and use it correctly. This will help even skin tone and reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and leathery texture.
2- Wear sunscreen year round and daily: SPF 45 or higher is recommended, luckily most moisturizers and foundations have SPF in them now!
4- Use a topical Antioxidant Cream: Use of a good topical cream can renew your skin’s neutral balance, look for ones rich in vitamin C and collagen to replenish your skin’s natural elasticity.

Depending on the severity of the damage and your own personal experience other treatments can be used such as in office microdermabrasion, chemical peels or skin resurfacing.  Germain Dermatology offers an entire line of products geared toward sun damage, as well as anti-aging. Come by the office or visit us online anytime to learn about the products or to make an appointment for your yearly check-up.
Be educated. Use precaution. Get your yearly skin check.
First time seeing a Dermatologist? Know what to expect!
When you see a dermatologist for a complete skin checkup, expect a 10-15-minute visit, including a review of your medical history and a head-to-toe skin examination. This is a good time to ask about any spots you are worried about; your dermatologist can educate you about what to look for, such as any changes in the size, color, borders, or shape of a mole. Typically, a spot that the doctor suspects is cancerous will be biopsied. During a biopsy, a sliver of tissue is removed for evaluation by a pathologist, who confirms (or refutes) the dermatologist’s suspicions.

Got Bumps on the Back of Your Arms?

Over the last few weeks, we’ve seen a slight increase in the number of patients walking through our doors with reddish to brownish bumps on their backs, arms, shoulders and chest. At first glance it may look like an acne-like outbreak on areas other than the face, but a closer look identifies the real culprit, Keratosis pilaris.
Courtesy Mayo Clinc

There are actually a few different forms of Keratosis, and generally speaking, it’s a fairly common affliction particularly among those living in areas with consistently strong sun. If you or your spouse notices the unusual bumps, first try to moisturize the area every morning and night. If your regular lotion isn’t helping, we have a wide array of Germain Rx medicated lotions that will likely do the trick…just give us a call to set up a consultation and we’ll help you find exactly what you need.
In some rare cases, one form of Keratosis can be dangerous and precancerous. If moisturizing for a few days doesn’t solve the problem, be sure to set up an appointment at 843-881-4440 so we can diagnose the situation early and set up a treatment plan. The treatment is non-invasive and effective, so don’t be afraid to pick up the phone if you sense you need our help!

Also we will be open this Saturday for cosmetic appointments, we know you’re busy, which is why we try our hardest to make it convenient for you to see us.

February is Full of Pink and Red but Your Face Doesn’t Have to Be

One of the most common skin conditions in the United States is Rosacea, effecting more than 14 million people. Many people associate Rosacea with a reddening or pinking of the face but it can also cause face swelling and visible blood vessels. These signs are only the external signs; people who suffer from Rosacea may feel like their skin is sunburned, dry, sensitive or scaly.

You might be thinking, who gets Rosacea? Well, anyone can but people with fair skin usually of Celtic or Scandinavian ancestry are more prone. Also, those between the ages of 30- 50, history of acne, or those whose parent(s) suffer are also more likely to have Rosacea. Dermatologist and scientist aren’t 100% sure what causes this skin condition but there are a few trends prevalent such as family history, a bacteria called bacillus oleronius that causes the immune system to overreact and a protein that normally protects the skin is processed differently causing the redness.

If you think you could be one of many with Rosacea schedule an appointment with us as soon as you can. Early treatment can help prevent your condition from worsening and with all the medical advancements in this area, you’ll sure to find better treatment regimens than in the past. So while most paint the town with red and pink this month, let us help you monitor and treat the unwanted tint on your face!

Don’t Be a Worry Wart

Warts…These skin growths while not cancerous or super dangerous are contagious and their appearance annoy most. Warts appear when the HPV virus infects the upper layer of the skin usually through in open cut or wound. It’s pretty easy to spot a wart on your body because they are typically skin colored but rough and appear raised. Dr. Germain will be able to determine if a marking on your skin is a wart by simply looking at it.

While most of you know what warts look like you might be asking who, what and why?

Anyone can be exposed to the wart virus but there are a few demographics that are more prone. Those who have weakened immune systems, children and teens as well as those who bite their nails or pick hangnails are more likely to have warts. Children are more prone to have cuts and scrapes making it easier for the HPV virus to infect them, causing warts.

Sometimes warts go away without treatment, especially for children patients. It does typically take longer for warts to disappear in adults so treatment from a dermatologist is usually the best course of action. It is important to treat your warts since they spread so quickly by touch or by touching any object that’s been in contact with the wart. There are multiple ways to treat a wart such as freezing it, with cantharidin and burning it are just a few common treatments.

To read more about warts, go to the American Academy of Dermatology’s site here.

The next time you see a small growth on your skin and think it’s a wart, don’t worry just give us a call at 843-881-4440 for a consultation and we’ll help you out!
