A little too much Sun?

Everyone knows the cautions of sun exposure, and if you are curious about any dos or don’ts, sunscreen tips or cancer facts you can scroll through our list of blogs and find all the information you need to be the most sun safe this Summer. However, we know accidents happen, hats are forgotten and sunscreen is sometimes NOT reapplied; therefore here are some after-sun care tips and tricks in the event that you get a little extra ‘vitamin D’.
          – First and foremost stay out of the sun until the sunburn goes away. This may be hard to do if you are on vacation, but it really is the most vital part of healing and protecting your skin as much as possible after the burn. If you must be out in the sun make sure to wear UV Protectant clothing that covers the affected areas.

–    Take a cool bath or shower. Cool water will stop the burning process, as well as cool yourself down. You can also apply a cold, damp towel to the burnt area for 10-15 min off and on to help take the heat out of the burn.
        –  After the shower/bath APPLY LOTION! Moisture is a huge key! It will help soothe the skin as well as help prevent or lessen peeling, itching and flaking. Products with Aloe Vera, Vitamin C and Vitamin E are most recommended. They may also help reduce skin damage, although that is not proven.  Be careful not to use lotions or creams that have any of these listed in the ingredients: petroleum, benzocaine, or lidocaine. Things with petroleum trap the heat in your skin (and you don’t want that!) and benzocaine and lidocaine can bother your skin. Hydrocortisone cream is acceptable for use for a day or two to relieve discomfort as well.
–           Drink lots of water! Burns take fluids from the rest of the body causing dehydration. Sports drinks and juice are also good choices. Some with severe sunburn may feel sick or dizzy- this is due to dehydration, be careful with children as this is easier for them to become sick.
          – Take an Anti-inflammatory. As soon as you are aware of the signs of sunburn take a dose of ibuprofen and continue dosage (as directed) for the next 24-48 hrs. An anti-inflammatory, opposed to just a pain medication, will help swelling and redness as well.
* If you feel excessively dizzy, weak, sick to your stomach, are experiencing  fever and chills seek medical help; or if you have blistering burns covering more than 20% of your body (DO NOT POP Blisters! Doing so can cause infection.)

The Latest at Germain: DualSculpting™

If you haven’t noticed by now we are more than thrilled to be offering DualSculpting™ at Germain Dermatology. DualSculpting™ is a simple concept- ‘Dual’ CoolSculpting™, however it is not yet widely used, and we are very excited to be the only practice in the Charleston with this cutting edge ability. With DualSculpting™ we are able to treat two areas with CoolSculpting® simultaneously, reducing treatment times in half! No need to come in twice as many times or stay twice as long for both love handles, or both thighs!

CoolSculpting™ by Zeltiq is an FDA cleared technology that uses cold therapy to freeze and destroy fat cells permanently, no surgery required. Zeltiq uses precisely targeted cold therapy in a comfortable treatment room. Most people ask, ‘Well if you’re freezing fat, then why can’t I just put a 20-lb bag of ice on my muffin top?’, however, Zeltiq is not actually freezing the fat but taking away the energy from the fat cell, causing it to die over a period of 2-4 months. It crystallizes the lipids in the fat cells causing the slow breakdown of the cells and then is released through your body’s normal metabolic processes. It’s the painless “cool” new way to get rid of fat in specific areas.
This process is intended for those who are at a healthy weight but just cannot seem to work off certain problem areas. Sound ‘cool’? Attend our DualSculpting™ Night on July 11th, 6pm, for live demonstrations, Q&A with Dr. Germain herself as well as appetizers and libations (*Event is free, but reservations prefered) or call us today to see if CoolSculpting™ or DualSculpting™ is right for you at (843) 881-4440.

Be ‘In the Know’ when Choosing Sunscreen for the Season

With the Charleston beach season approaching it is important to be up-to-date with the facts for 2013 sun protection and summer skin care. In 2011 the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) presented significant changes to sunscreen products. These changes were made in order to help us purchase the correct products for the protection we desire.
One of the most important adjustments was a stricter ruling on which products where allowed to present as “Broad Spectrum” on labels. Broad spectrum sun protection protects against UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays can prematurely age your skin, causing wrinkles and age spots, and can pass through window glass. UVB rays are the primary cause of sunburn and are blocked by window glass. If the products do not pass the broad spectrum testing they must now be labeled with “Skin Cancer/Skin Aging Alert: Spending time in the sun increases your risk of skin cancer and early skin aging.”
Another key update to labels is the time (in minutes) the sun block will protect you during swimming or sweating. Waterproof, sweat proof and the term sun block is no longer accurate. This will greatly help with knowing when to reapply to be sufficiently protected from the sun’s ray.
When applying sunscreen use enough to generally cover all skin that is not covered by clothing or not protected by UV shielded clothes (as we have mentioned before the sun’s rays can penetrate lower quality swimwear and materials). The American Association of Dermatology suggests, “Follow the guideline of “one ounce, enough to fill a shot glass”, which dermatologists consider the amount needed to cover the exposed areas of the body. Adjust the amount of sunscreen applied depending on your body size.” Make sure to apply AT LEAST a 30 SPF DAILY, and apply to dry skin AT LEAST 15 minutes before going in the sun.
We want everyone to enjoy our beautiful Charleston Summers, but to do it safely. When choosing sunscreen make sure to read the labels and choose the right one for your lifestyle and skin type. Germain RX offers a wide variety of Sunscreens for your specific skin type, including this wonderful Sheer Sunscreen for optimal protection with a hardly there feel.
And when preparing for a day out don’t forget about your lips! Lips are prone to skin cancer as well- purchase your chapstick with just as much caution and reapply often.

Skin Care Precautions for Moms-to-Be

With Spring in the air it’s not only the flowers that are blooming…We are starting to see ducklings at the park, saplings on the trees, and baby bumps a plenty! While some moms-to-be have the all the luck of the maternal glow, the rest of us need some help. While looking at skin care products what should you AVOID during your routine while expecting?

Top of the list are products containing Retinoids.
Retinoids, a type of Vitamin A, are found in many moisturizers and are used to improve skin tone and reduce wrinkles. So far no evidence has been shown that topical use is harmful to a baby, but doctors are being extra cautious and advising to stop or limit the use while expecting due to the harmful effects of high doses of Vitamin A on babies in the womb.
Following suit is Salicylic Acid.
Salicylic acid is used mainly for treating acne (a big problem for many expecting mothers). High does in the oral form have been shown to cause birth defects and complications in pregnancy- again doctors choose to be extra cautious and suggest stopping or limiting it’s use while pregnant. One larger precaution is not to use facial peels containing Salicylic Acid as it gives the skin more time to soak in the solution- more absorption in the bloodstream.
Finally is Soy.
Yes you read that right… SOY! Most moms-to-be look for natural and healthy alternatives in diets and beauty products but soy isn’t the best go to. Expecting mothers who suffer from Melasma, also known as pregnancy mask, can actually get worse effects by using products with soy. Some products use soy which have the estrogenic components removed and this makes them safer to use. Check the ingredients carefully.

Basic rule, when expecting just take care of yourself! Pregnancy effects everyone different. If your usual products are too harsh for your mom-to-be self ask your dermatologists for some gentler options. Need a stronger, but safe, treatment for your pregnancy acne? Try using oil free makeup and lotions, and ask your doctor for safe treatment options. Germain RX has an anti-aging and acne line of Pregnancy SAFE products and we can help you set up a routine that is perfect for you.

Even though some women naturally have that glow-
we can always help you fake it!

·        *  Botox $9.75/unit
BOTOX works by relaxing the specific muscles that contract to cause wrinkles. Although a great deal of skill and focus is required on the part of the physician, for patients, BOTOX treatments in South Carolina will actually seem very simple and easy. Just apply some ice to the treatment area, a few tiny injections, a slight amount of pressure – and, before you know it, the treatment is over!
Dr. Germain recommends that her patients keep up with BOTOX treatments every 3 to 4 months to maintain beautiful, prolonged wrinkle reduction.

* Dysport $3.00/unit

Dr. Germain also offers Dysport™, a BOTOX alternative. She may recommend Dysport for some patients and can discuss the differences between the two treatments with you. Dysport is an injection used to temporarily improve the look of your moderate to severe frown lines without changing the look of your whole face. The untreated facial muscles still work normally, allowing you to freely show facial expressions, such as smiling, in untreated areas.

Does your Suit Protect You?

It is that time of year where retailers are starting to stock the shelves with the dreaded BATHING SUIT  From the trendy vintage one piece to the tiny bikini they can make even those with the fittest bodies feel uncomfortable. Other than hiding your less favorable features what do you look for in swimwear?

Most women (and men) do not know that most swimwear material is not UV Protected. When we head to the pool or the beach and do our duties of lathering on sun block to all the ‘exposed’ areas we are leaving out some of the most delicate and, actually, exposed parts of our skin- those under the suits!

In general bathing suits and clothing alike aren’t protection from UV Rays.  When buying swim wear or beach attire look for those with an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) as high as 50. If you can’t find clothes with UPF, we recommend wearing tightly woven, dark-colored fabrics. You’ll be surprised when inspecting the tags of your favorite bikinis or cover-ups that they offer little to no protection from the sun.

In addition to looking for sun protected clothing/swimwear we suggest applying sun block to your ENTIRE body before dressing for a day in the sun. You’re most sensitive areas deserve as much TLC from damaging rays as the rest.  Also, when planning your summer fun make sure to stay hydrated, wear sunglasses, hats to protected your face and scalp and stay near shaded areas to retire to in the hottest times of the day (10am-4pm).

Even with all the awareness of skin cancer and sun damage the numbers are increasing- take your first steps in not becoming a statistic.
Fun Facts: Technology and Swimwear?
Some designers are also on the brink of developing a ‘Smart Bikini’. A new swimsuit was developed in Canada to provide protection from “post-tan” problems by warning of excess UV light. The suits look like regular bikinis decorated with beads of plastic that can change their color depending on the intensity of UV emission. Exposed to low or medium emission, the beads are of white or lavender color. Abnormal rate of UV emission makes the beads glow deep violet, alarmingly indicating that tanning should be ceased.   This swimsuit is available this month! Check it out at Solestrom. There is also one already on the market by Solestrom that has a LED UV meter built into the belt, which also shows if it’s time to stop sunbathing. The LED UV meter is solar powered.  What will we see next?!
As always the best preventative measure is abstinence. Staying out of the most harmful rays of the sun, wearing sunscreen each day and getting checked regularly. If you know you will be exposed to the sun we want you to be protected the best you can!

Men’s skin needs TLC, too!

Traditionally when we think of skin care and cosmetic procedures we think of women, but that’s not always the case. There are hundreds of skin care products and procedures today geared toward men, but most men still have a certain stigma of using products- they shouldn’t skin care and even cosmetic procedures are just as beneficial and preventative for men as they are for women! Just because men have the persona of being rough and rugged doesn’t mean their skin is too.

For example men’s skin ages just as easily as women’s and it’s reported that only 5% of men use sunscreen on a daily basis. For men and women alike using sunscreen daily (usually within a moisturizer) is the number one method to prevent premature aging, not to mention skin cancer. Men also seem to complain about adult acne. The proper shaving technique, a cleanser for their skin type and a good moisturizer will fix the common problems of adult acne in a pinch (While also lying of the booze, staying dehydrated and keeping a distance from unhealthy greasy foods doesn’t hurt.).  Using a bar of soap from head to toe just doesn’t cut it.

There are also some great cosmetic procedures men can benefit from. Men, much more so than the average woman, constantly deal with the issue of excessive body hair. Laser hair removal is a perfect solution to this problem. It’s non-evasive, perfect for large areas of hair (ie: shoulders, back, chest) and helps reduce the amount of hair that grows back. Not to mention it is much less painful than waxing and much less of a task than trying to shave all those awkward areas. Laser hair removal is also an option for men who have severe or constant irritation when shaving facial hair.

On the opposite end most men don’t know that a dermatologist is the number one doctor to see for hair loss. A dermatologist can best determine the treatment for the hair loss, provided it is not caused by a deeper medical issue. Testosterone blocking medications and transplants are among the most popular treatments.

It’s also becoming more and more acceptable for men to use Botox, facial fillers and chemical peels. There is no shame in visiting your dermatologist for more than just a skin check. You would be surprised at what they could do for you, and what simple changes to your skin routine could do for your skin health!
